Mr. J D Patil is a Whole-time Director, and Senior Executive Vice President for L&T’s Defence Business.  He is an alumnus of IIT Mumbai, having pursued M. Tech (Mechanical Engineering) in 1978.

He has had a rich, nearly four decade long career in L&T, and has been instrumental in growing the nascent Technology and Product Development Group of L&T’s corporate R&D with a focus on top end inter-disciplinary Product Development. During the first decade of his career, Mr. Patil was a member of a core team that designed and developed super heavy rotating industrial machinery systems for Cement, Chemical, Fertilizer, & Mineral processing plants. A few of these were the largest in South East Asia, and with contemporary technologies, generations ahead of those in India, with far more efficiency built from design, and in league with best in the world.  

Mr. Patil has spearheaded the company’s foray in the Defence sector since the inception of this segment in L&T; about 15 years ahead of the opening up of Defence Production for participation by Private Companies in 2001 (licensing it in 2002). He led the development efforts for the first orders for weapon delivery systems from DRDO for missiles under IGMDP. His responsibilities & contribution included Conceptualization, Design, Development, Production, System Integration, Qualification & Firing trials, and Through Life Support ofground weapon delivery and Engineering Systems for missile programmes.

Over the years, under his leadership, L&T built a portfolio of indigenous, in-house products, systems and technologies both on its own and by teaming up with DRDO and with the Indian Navy, and is today engaged in design-to-delivery of solutions across its chosen Defence segments.

Mr. Patil heads the Defence Business at L&T with a focus on Naval Platforms (Submarines & Warships), Naval & Land Weapon Launch & Engineering Systems, Guns, Missiles & Armoured Systems, Radar Systems, Military Communication Systems & Avionics. He also oversees dedicated Technology Development Centers & Design Centers for the Defence Sector, the Prototype Development center at Powai & at Bengaluru, as well as Defence Production Centers at Talegaon (near Pune), Coimbatore, Visakhapatnam and Kattupalli, besides specific dedicated centers at L&T’s Powai, Hazira, Chennai and Baroda complexes.

Amongst Mr. Patil’s most notable achievements, is the order for the K9 Tracked SP Artillery Gun system jointly developed by L&T with a foreign collaborator, the PINAKA Multi Barrel Rocket Launchers, Akash Missile propulsion airframes & Missile Launchers, and setting up the VLF communication facility for the Armed Forces.

Besides Whole-Time Director - Defence Business and member of the Board of Directors of L&T, he is Chairman of the Board of Directors of L&T MBDA Missile Systems Limited, member of the Board of L&T Special Steel and Heavy Forging Private Limited, a Joint Venture between L&T and Nuclear Power Corporation of India, Chairman of the FICCI Defence & Aerospace Committee, member of the FICCI Committee on Homeland Security and a member of the FICCI National Executive. He is a founder member and Vice Chairman of Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers, setup under the aegis of the CII.
